About this guide

What is authentic style?

Authentic style is the way of dressing that looks like you: not a trend, not a copy of someone you admire, but clothes that match your life, your body and your personality. You recognise it when an outfit feels effortless and other people say "that's so you".

Everyone already has a personal style. Most of us just need a way to uncover it, and the courage to wear it.

How to find your personal style in 6 steps

  1. Your lifestyle: where your time really goes, and what your clothes need to do there.
  2. Your current wardrobe: what you love, what you never wear, and the patterns behind both.
  3. Who you dress for: a psychologist's look at the stories in your closet.
  4. Your signature words: three to five words for the style you want.
  5. Your mood board: turning those words into a picture.
  6. Your archetypes: the personality underneath your style, and how to dress it.

Why style is also psychology

For years I worked as a personal stylist. Then I noticed that two women with the same coloring and body shape could wear the same dress, and on one it looked like her, while on the other it looked like a costume. That question took me back to university to study psychology.

Today I'm a psychoanalytic coach, and the workbook includes a page most style guides skip: who are you really dressing for? Many clothes we never wear were bought for the person we wish we were, or to please someone else. Your style starts when you dress for yourself.

Style archetypes: the personality behind your style

The last step introduces the 12 style archetypes, from the Ruler and the Sage to the Lover and the Explorer. Most of us lead with two or three, and the workbook shows how to dress them: a base, an accent and a detail. Find yours with my free archetype test, and read more in the 12 style archetypes explained.

Frequently asked questions

How do I find my personal style?

Start with your real life, not with trends: how you spend your week, which clothes you love and which you never wear, and why. Then choose three to five words for the style you want, build a mood board, and find your style archetypes. The free workbook takes you through these six steps with worksheets.

What are style archetypes?

Archetypes are universal personality patterns, such as the Ruler, the Lover or the Explorer. Each one has its own colors, fabrics and shapes. Most people lead with two or three, and dressing them is what makes a style feel authentic. You can find yours with my free 10-minute test.

How long does it take to find your style?

The workbook takes about an hour. Wearing your style confidently takes longer: most of my clients need a few weeks of trying new combinations before it feels natural.

Do I need to buy new clothes?

No. The workbook starts with the clothes you already own. It helps you see what works, what doesn't, and which few pieces would make the biggest difference, so you buy less and wear more.

What is the difference between personal style and fashion?

Fashion changes every season; personal style stays. Trends can be part of your style, but only the ones that fit your life, your body and your personality.

Is the workbook really free?

Yes. Enter your name and email in the form above and the 29-page PDF arrives in your inbox. You'll also get a few short emails with style ideas, and you can unsubscribe with one click.
